Backyard Dying

There's nothing more freeing than making a mess... like turning your fingers blue and throwing fabric all over the lawn kind of mess. That is just what we did. Taking a selection of materials including yarn, silk and cotton, my girlfriends and I explored different folds and ties to create a collection of everything indigo. This was unchartered territory for all of us, and what fun it was to experiment with patterns and witness the chemistry at work, as the dyed fabric emerged from the mixture a forest green and quickly oxidized into shades of deep blue. When we wrapped things up just before dark, we all agreed that we would have to do this again. Is is too soon to be thinking about the spring? I think not.
